ShowsNorm Bryant and Judge Duncan Beagle
The Judge and The Barber King November 27, 2019 Throughout the entirety of Flint’s history there have been several men who have consistently supported and promoted the community. Among them are business leaders, political figures, philanthropists, athletes, and activists.
Then, there are Judge Duncan Beagle and Norm Bryant. Perhaps the embodiment of all of the aforementioned luminaries, they bring a grass roots, deeply entrenched lifetime of community support and service to the table. Their contributions stand among the very best the community has ever had to offer. In many ways, large and small, they are two ends of the same pillar. Judge Beagle is a Southwestern Colt. A terrific athlete in his own right, he has had the back of countless city athletes over decades of service as a Judge, and civic leader. His family has roots in the legal community that go back to his grandfather also a Judge Beagle, who presided over the famous Ponzi scheme at the Flint Industrial Savings Bank, 90 years ago. Norm Bryant is a Northern Viking. A star in a backfield that included Tony Burton, who went on to fame as a professional football player, boxer, and ultimately Hollywood actor. (Burton is best known is his role as the trainer of both Apollo Creed and Rocky in the Sylvester Stallone “Rocky” movies.) Norm also owned a famous North End barber shop, where he held court, presiding over some of the greatest sports debates in Flint history, and often with the very athletes who created the stories. Both are consummate historians and have been instrumental in preserving everything from Atwood Stadium to the actual artifacts and trophies from city sports. Together they span more than 70 years of Flint history, in general, and given their sports proclivities, they are bonafide Flint sports royalty and history gurus. That’s why we brought them together in the same room at the same time to join “Fish and the Flint Chronicles”. We wanted to capture the experience and knowledge of these two men, while discussing the greatest of the great Flint athletes. The teams, players, myths, legends, achievements and history of the best, during a time when Flint sports stood alone in the United States, as the Kingdom of Champions. It’s a well won title, and Norm and Duncan are as good as it gets when it comes to discussing how it came to be! There is no question that this is an episode that will be locked down in the vaults for posterity. It is with great delight that we present The Judge and The Barber King, Duncan Beagle and Norm Bryant. As good as Flint sports conversations get! |
