ShowsKiara Tyler, Entrepreneur
KALM Clothing, Street Wear September 18, 2019 Kiara Tyler had no idea what she was doing when she started her business. She didn’t understand business, taxes, corporate structures, or even how to actually manufacture or distribute the products she was selling. Naturally she’s been a huge success!
Despite her challenges, the business she started from scratch in her mom's house on the north side of Flint, Kalm Clothing, has already become an iconic fashion imprint. Kiara embodies virtually every element of what it takes to succeed as an entrepreneur: vision, drive, resilience, creativity, and focus. That she’s doing it from her home-base, in Flint, makes it all the more impressive. She is now operating out of a space at the Ferris Wheel in downtown Flint. Her success has attracted some big name investors, and supporters including local business leaders Phil Hagerman, founder and former CEO of Diplomat Pharmacy, now at the Ferris Wheel and Skypoint Ventures, and the Ferris’s Chief Innovation Officer, David Ollila. Also on board with Kiara and Kalm is Wall Street venture capitalist Robert Wolf, former MLB and NFL star Deion Sanders, former NFL star and current TV star Michael Strahan, current NFL and NBA stars Victor Cruz and Draymond Green, and TV news reporter for 60 Minutes, Soledad O’Brien, are all investors and backers of Kiara and Kalm. If there is one entrepreneur that Tyler brings to mind for us, it’s William C. “Billy” Durant, another Flint entrepreneur. He did pretty well for himself--you may have heard of the businesses he created: General Motors, Buick, Chevrolet, Pontiac, Frigidaire, AC Spark Plug to name the most popular. That’s pretty good company, and if Kiara is also really “More Phil Knight, than Nike founder, Phil Knight”, as Ollila says, then she’s in pretty lofty but appropriate company. She’s not only a tremendous entrepreneur, she’s the star of a particularly terrific episode of “Fish and The Flint Chronicles”! |
