ShowsDerek Carey Vernon
Actor, Boxer, Marathoner, Entrepreneur February 8th, 2023 This show is a first for us as it comes live and direct from the former Spandau Prison in Berlin, Germany! But first a little bit about how this happened.
It all starts with our pal in the U.K. Derek Carey Vernon. And Derek Carey Vernon is one cool and eclectic dude! He is a man of multiple talents, skills, and avocations. He’s been a world class runner, a professional boxer, minister, writer and actor. He’s been in feature films, and kibbutzes with some of the worlds best in the boxing and entertainment world. He’s also a musician and music fan who pals around with the Beatles original drummer Pete Best, and his brother. Derek lives in England, and hails from Warrington which is just a stones throw from Liverpool, which helps to explain the Beatles connection. His. Connection to Flint is that Derek is an international fan of “Fish and The Flint Chronicles”, and a good friend of Fish’s! So we thought it would be cool to have him on the show at some point, so it was with great excitement that we talked to Derek about an idea for that show. His idea was awesome. As it turns out Derek’s dad, Derek Vernon, Sr., was a prison guard at the famous and historic Spandau Prison. The prison located in the borough of Spandau in Berlin was originally a military prison, built in 1876 but became a concentration camp under Hitler’s Nazi regime. After the end of the Third Reich, it became a special prison to house captured high ranking Nazis. Among them were: Albert Speer Rudolf Hess Erich Räeder Karl Donitz Balder von Schirach Walther Funk Konstantin Neurath Albert Speer was an architect and Minister of Armaments and War Production in Nazi Germany during most of the war. So he’s basically the guy the American Arsenal of Democracy crushed. He made liberal use of slave labor during the Reich’s run. Rudolf Hess was one of the top Nazis, appointed Deputy Führer to Hitler in 1933, he held that position until 1941. Derek’s dad was part of a multi national military guard team that rotated at Spandau guarding these Nazi’s. Derek and his dad take us back to Spandau LIVE in Berlin to provide a virtual tour and tell the tale of one of the most notorious (and unusual) prisons ever. It’s another trip in to history today on an international dip in to the waters of The Aquarium! |
