ShowsTom Alward
NFL Football Player Coach January 4, 2023 Playing at Bendle High School Tom Alward was clearly a superior athlete. Competing at the school that had produced perhaps the greatest athlete in Flint area history Paul Krause, Alward had a lot to live up to. But he did just fine as it turned out. He was a multi sport star like Krause, and competed in the CANUSA and Olympian Games with the best the area had to offer. After high school he went on to play offensive line for the Nebraska Cornhuskers winning a National Championship. From there he played in the NFL for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
After his playing career ended he went in to coaching that included stints at his alma mater Bendle, and Flint Central where he coached the JV squad, winning the City and Saginaw Valley Championships in 1980 with a squad that featured Fish! Alward wanted to be the Head Coach and that wasn’t happening at Flint Central, so he moved on and wound up at Goodrich where he would ultimately establish a legendary status. Alward joins us in the Aquarium to talk about all of it including his relationship with his father, and now his dad helped Tracy’s dad Mike Pointer score a scholarship to play football for Michigan. Fish’s dad played for Tom’s Dad as well at Bendle with Paul Krause, when Alward was a ball boy! It’s all about closing the circle in this episode and we discuss the season ahead. (Update: Alward led his Goodrich Martian squad to the State Championship Game at Ford Field where they lost to a tough Grand Rapids squad). |
