*Sports & Business + Health and Well Being *Show aired on December 15th, 2021 Reggie Williams is back again to join Fish. One of the greatest all time athletes in Flint history from Whittier Junior High and Flint Southwestern, his story is hardly just about sports. That’s saying an awful lot because his storied career involves being considered one of the best football players in Flint history, Dartmouth College history, and the NFL Cincinnati Bengals history. But even while he was playing the game professionally Reggie was functioning as a Cincinnati City Councilman. That leadership led him to pave the way for an elimination of pension investments in to Apartheid based South Africa. According to Bishop Desmond Tutu, that was the “Straw that broke the camel’s back” in terms of ending Apartheid as it involved significant economic impairment to the existing system. Along the way he also achieved:
Despite all of those achievements, perhaps nothing compares to overcoming the serious health issues he has had to deal with. Chiefly among them are a heart attack, stroke. But nothing could prepare him for the unreal challenges he would face with his knee. This is the story of the ultimate challenge tackled by the ultimate warrior - a Flintstone named Reggie Williams. Steve Johnson
Long time Flint Athlete and Official Pairing Steve Johnson with Reggie Williams is like a one two punch of hard core resilience. A Carman graduate and long time athlete, and official, he was never one to stand still for long. But when he was waylaid with a cancer diagnoses it was like a head slap. Having helped his close friend Judge Duncan Beagle through a difficult health crisis, he knew that it would take humor, optimism, and most of all a deep and faith to get through what he was about to face. How it would all play out was something he would have never imagined. It’s all here on a very special episode of “Fish and The Flint Chronicles!” |
Stories of resilience and optimism that are best summed up by Reggie Williams favorite words:
INVICTUS By William Ernest Henley Out of the night that covers me, Black as the pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds and shall find me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul. |
