Professional Basketball Player
Michigan State Star
Gatorade National Player of the Year

July 14, 2021
If you know anything about Flint area basketball, you know that some of the greatest high school players in Michigan history have come out of Flint. The names are all legendary, and well known to local hoops fans: Eric Turner, Trent Tucker, Glen Rice, Jeff Grayer, Roy Marble, The venerable   “Flintstones” of Michigan State : Mateen Cleaves, Morris ‘MoPete’ Peterson, Charlie Bell, Eddie Robinson, Mark Harris, Darryl Johnson, Erv Leavey, Terrence ’T’ Greene, Kyle Kuzma, and Monte Morris—just to name a few!

Most of them played in the NBA, all of them (except Robinson who went almost directly to the NBA after an extended small school stint) were high school stars, and all were college royalty. But there is one thing none of them ever were - the number 1 rated high school player in the #1 basketball nation on earth. No, that legacy is reserved for only one Flintstone hoops legend. That man is Kelvin Torbert.

His high school career at Flint Northwestern is truly second to none, and again that is really saying something in this town! While at Northwestern the 6-5 superstar:

  • Made All City and All Valley
  • Won Michigan’s Mr. Basketball Award
  • Was named a McDonald’s All American
  • Named the #1 best shooting guard in North America
  • Named the 2001 Sporting News Player of The Year
  • Won the Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of The Year
  • Finished his prep career as the #2 scorer in Flint history
  • Averaged 26 points, 8.2 boards, 3.5 assists, and 2.5 steals

After that illustrious career Torbert moved on to play for Tom Izzo at Michigan State University, which he capped off with a Final Four appearance in 2005. Saddled with injuries at MSU and with the serious illness of his father, Kelvin’s success was hampered as a player in college and precluded the NBA opportunity. But he achieved his degree, graduated, and went on to a terrific international professional career.

Now a family man and business professional, he is set to join several former Spartan hoops alums at United Wholesale Mortgage, a firm owned by former Spartan player Matt Ishiba. Already on board there are Charlie Bell, Mateen Cleaves, Antonio Smith and several other MSU former athletes. For Torbert, it will be another opportunity to win, another chance to prove himself, and another chance to represent Flint, albeit in another arena, the rough world of business. While his towering physical presence will be of little help there, his big personality, big heart, and winner’s spirit will undoubtedly be a decided advantage.

Join Fish and Kelvin as they break it all down in another great tale from the Aquarium production line, in the story factory that is Fish and The Flint Chronicles!
