ShowsDr. Gary Powell Nash
World Class Composer Professor at Fisk University February 2, 2022 When Gary Nash was playing football at Whittier Junior High School, it wasn’t entirely clear that his future would lead to becoming a world class composer. Sure, he loved music. But he loved football too. As it turned out the football world’s loss was the music and education world's gain.
Nash has composed works for orchestra, band, choir, art songs (four in Chinese), electroacoustic works and several instrumental chamber compositions. His music has been performed in all major regions of the United States and as well as in Canada, People's Republic of China, Philippines and Taiwan. He has received a multitude of honors along the way: His composition On The Battlefield with Certainty was used to commemorate the opening of the National Museum of African-American Music, Southern Grandparents was used for the Mississippi Bicentennial Celebration, among many others. Nash was the Tennessee Music Teachers Association Composer of the Year in 2006. He was honored at Carnegie Hall and Fulbright as visiting Professor of Music, along with numerous other accolades. His scores are featured on several record labels. He brings his voluminous musical brilliance in to the Aquarium of Fish and The Flint Chronicles for a show that is both classic and classical! |
